ALAN G. SCHWARTZ, M.D. Class of 1958
Following an internship and residency in Buffalo, I moved back to the general New York City area to open a solo practice in Carmel NY as the first internist in Putnam County. After five years I joined with another physician, and for most of the next 35 years I remained in a two man practice. I had the stimulation in participation in the growth and development of the medical community from an initial 18 bed hospital to a multi-specialist regional medical center. I started practicing internal medicine and retired after 42 years as a PCP (primary care physician) with memories of being in what I consider the “Golden Age of Medicine.”
Fifty one years ago while in my junior year at NYU I married Patti Rose, a fellow student at Tufts College. We had three children who have produced us with six grandchildren.
Fortunately Pat and I still enjoy good health, which has allowed us to pursue an active retirement. We maintain our primary home in Mahopac, NY and have a vacation house in Orleans on Cape Cod. I no longer ski or ice skate and for the past four years we have been able to escape what I now consider the “ravages of the northeast” by being a snow flake in Sarasota. We have traveled, played at golf, enjoyed gardening and birding. The time and freedom from the stress of active practice have allowed me to play bridge, go to Rotary meetings, be on the Board of Directors of a community mental health agency, go clamming on the Cape, and to read my mail and the Times while having a second cup of coffee for breakfast.
