CLINICAL TRIALS

Forefront of Discovery
For decades, NYU investigators have been at the forefront of scientific discovery in the realm of Alzheimer’s disease.  In just the last few years, scientists have made significant strides in gaining a better understanding of dementia and aging-related brain disorders.  However, laboratory research can only be fully appreciated and the potential fully realized through clinical studies.

Clinical trials are the force behind the treatment, cure and prevention of any disease.  Through the volunteerism of patients and those affected by an illness, knowledge is advanced, and a promise for a cure becomes more of a reality.

Program at the Silberstein Institute

Presently, at the Silberstein Institute, a very active clinical trials program is evaluating the newest generation of medications for memory disorders.  NYU has been a testing site for the current generation of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologictreatments for memory disorders and conducted the key validation studies for

Steve Ferris, Ph.D. and Barry Resiberg M.D. directors of the Silberstein Institute Clinical Trials Programs.

Namenda (memantine), a widely used dementia drug, leading to FDA approval. The close relationship between this program and active pre-clinical drug discovery research ensures that patients will have privileged access to ground-breaking treatments (e.g. vaccines) at the earliest stages.  Additionally, a unique nationally recognized research program at the Silberstein Institute also focuses on the crucial role of caregivers and reducing caregiver stress.

Value of Participation
It has been proven that whether or not an experimental treatment is effective, individuals who participate in clinical studies appear to do better than people in a similar stage of their disease who are not enrolled in a trial. The scientific reasoning for this advantage is based on the general high quality of care provided during clinical studies.
