NYU Sleep Disorders Center Expert Available to Discuss Sleep Apnea and Stroke
Dr. Ana Krieger, Assistant Professor and Director of the NYU Sleep Disorders Center, is available to discuss a study published in the November 10th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, about the increased risk of stroke and death associated with obstructive sleep apnea. Researchers at the NYU Sleep Disorders Center are working to determine the causal link between sleep apnea and stroke.
Dr. Krieger said, “This study demonstrates a high likelihood that sleep apnea is associated with the development of stroke, independently of other factors—a finding discussed by the medical community for many years, but not previously confirmed. The implications of this finding lead us to the next step towards the evaluation of sleep apnea treatment effectiveness to prevent stroke." She added, “As the population becomes increasingly aware of sleep apnea, it is important to expand the discussion about the potential health consequences associated with this condition and the beneficial effects of treatment.”
