WILLIAM L. CARROLL, M.D., APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF NYU CANCER INSTITUTE
NEW YORK, NY – December 17, 2007 – Dr. Robert I. Grossman, CEO and Dean of NYU Medical Center and Mr. Norman Eig, Chairman of NYU Cancer Institute’s Board of Directors, announced that William L. Carroll, M.D., the Julie and Edward J. Minskoff Professor of Pediatrics, had accepted the position of Director of the NYU Cancer Institute after serving a brief tenure as Acting Director. In his new capacity, Dr. Carroll will oversee all aspects of cancer research and treatment on the NYU Medical Center campus. “Since coming to NYU Medical Center in 2001, Dr. Carroll has repeatedly demonstrated the qualities we were seeking for this crucial position: a passionate devotion to patients, a tireless and fruitful quest for new answers, and an inspiring and inclusive manner with colleagues at all levels,” said Dr. Grossman.
To date, Dr. Carroll has served as Deputy Director of the NYU Cancer Institute, Medical Director of the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Under his leadership, the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology has grown significantly, with increased volume, greater access to clinical trials and phase I protocols, and an expanded research program. This past year saw the opening of the superb new home of the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, offering patients and their families premises shining with hope and focused on wellness and interdisciplinary care.
Dr. Carroll has attained international renown as a leader in using genomics to study childhood tumors. He has played a key role in developing new treatments, especially as regards the most common form of childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). As Chair of the Children’s Oncology Group ALL Committee, he directs the largest clinical trials network for children with cancer worldwide and has used the field of genomics to understand the underlying biological pathways that drive leukemia progression and drug resistance. He has served as both a Member and Chair of the National Cancer Institute’s Subcommittee A for Cancer Centers.
Dr. Carroll holds an M.D. from the University of California-Irvine, and obtained his Post-Doctoral Training in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Stanford University Medical Center.
Dr. Grossman stated that he was “gratified that a person of such stature, and one whom we have the benefit of knowing well already, will be leading our efforts in the field of cancer.”
