Select Agent Survey 2004This is a reminder to all PIs with laboratories at NYUMC of the need to register with the CDC or the USDA prior to possession, use or transfer of regulated quantities of "Select Agents" - those biological agents and toxins with the potential to be used for bioterrorism. In order to ensure that we remain in compliance with this regulation, each PI or his/her designee must complete the online survey by 4/16/04, indicating possession or non-possession of Select Agents. Completion of the form should take less than 5 minutes. Please contact Gerry Griffin if you have any problems completing the online form. Background: In December 2002, the Department of Health and Human Services promulgated legislation on the possession, use and transfer of select agents and toxins. These biological agents and toxins known as "Select Agents" have the potential to pose a severe threat to public health and safety as agents of bioterrorism. Criminal penalties can result for anyone who possesses, transfers or uses these agents without prior registration. Exemptions: For toxins, there are specific quantities that a PI may possess without requiring registration. Exempt quantities of toxins are noted on the list. Some avirulent strains of agents have also been exempted from the regulations and the list of exemptions can be found on the CDC website on Select Agent exclusions. Additional information
on the Select Agent Program is available on the CDC
Select Agent website. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions, please contact Gerry Griffin at 36944. You may also download the reporting form as an adobe file. |
