Under the direction of Dr. Paul Gagne and Dr. Glen Jacobowitz, the Division
of Vascular Surgery founded the Vascular Surgery
Basic Science Laboratory at New York University School of Medicine in 1999. Since its formation,
the laboratory has been extremely successful in expanding the understanding
of the mechanisms involved in vascular disease. Particular attention
has focused on the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) during vascular
remodeling following ischemic heart injury.
Molecular biological techniques have been employed in both animal and
cellular models in an attempt to understand and explain the expression,
activation, and regulation of MMPs in vascular disease. Additional work
is under way in the Vascular Surgery Basic Science Laboratory to investigate
angiogenic growth factors in an effort to improve new blood vessel growth.
Our work has been presented at various national settings in the form
of abstracts, papers, and presentations.
The Division of Vascular Surgery offers a basic science research fellowship.
The research fellow is responsible for formulating research projects,
and planning and carrying out the research protocol. Fellows are expected
to publish and present their work at national vascular meetings.
Prior Research Fellows
2000 - 2001 Bart Muhs
2000 - 2001 George Plitas
