Financial Assistance

The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries is committed to serving injured dancers regardless of ability to pay. We assist dancers who are in financial need in a number of ways: we help dancers identify whether or not they are eligible for Medicaid, as well as screen them for other sources of internal and external financial assistance.

Physician Pro-Bono Services
Our physicians donate their time for all professional services provided at the Dance Clinic.

Sliding Fee Scale
The Harkness Center’s charity care policy provides a 50% discount off all medical services (doctor’s visits, radiology services, and physical therapy) to dancers who do not have health insurance and who meet our financial aid requirements.

Special Assistance Fund
In 1997, the LuEsther T. Mertz Advised Fund of the New York Community Trust made a challenge gift to the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries to create an endowment for dancers that would provide a long-term solution for providing access to healthcare for dancers without insurance or financial means.

Who is Eligible?
Any dancer demonstrating financial need. Interested dancers must complete an application and submit proof of income and/or savings as well as proof of monthly expenses for review by NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases’ Charity Care Committee.
