The NYU Cochlear Implant Center was among the first in the country to study
and use the multichannel cochlear implant to restore hearing in deaf adults
and children. Since 1984, the Center's specialists have inserted more than
700 cochlear implants in patients ranging from 6 months to 85 years of age.
The overwhelming majority of severe-to-profoundly deaf individuals, including
children and adults born deaf, are known to benefit from the implant - and
NYU's surgeons and research scientists continue to expand and refine the
scope of the technology. The staff is internationally recognized for its
contributions; its current activities include the design of new electrode
arrays to increase device benefit; the development of new device-programming
techniques to increase speech understanding; the study of results obtained
from a variety of hearing-impaired individuals, including the long-term deafened;
and the measurement of the benefits from having an implant in each ear. Staff
members work closely with all manufacturers in the development of new techniques
and devices, giving them early access to innovative technology, promising
even greater benefits in the future.
