Length of Training Program:
Appointments are for 12 months and follow the
normal training year, July 1st through June 30th.
Description of Fellowship:
Fellowships start July 1st. The program is accredited
to train two fellows per year. The program follows the guidelines
for training established by the American Society for Surgery of
the Hand. Acute trauma experience is acquired at Bellevue Hospital
where the fellows rotate on the microsurgery and replantation team.
Secondary reconstructive problems come from a broad referral base,
as do patients with arthritis, tumors and congenital deformities.
Both private and clinic cases are managed, in both plastic surgical
and orthopedic surgical based offices.
Responsibilities of Fellows:
In addition to the emphasis on surgical expertise,
the curriculum of the fellows is oriented toward evaluation of patient
problems and development of judgment in establishing and carrying
through complex treatment programs. Fellows have teaching responsibilities,
working closely with and acting as consultants to the residents
on clinical services. The service is oriented toward comprehensive
care of the hand, so one participates in such evaluations as electrodiagnostic
testing, learns about upper extremity prostheses and finds strong
emphasis on post-operative care. The fellows rotate with Drs. Beasley,
Friedman and Choi at NYU Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital Hand
Service and with Dr. Hausman, Department of Orthopedics at Mt. Sinai
Hospital. A one month elective is scheduled for each fellow.
Other Related Activities:
Fellows participate in Journal club meetings,
clinics, conferences, teaching rounds and other activities. They
are also invited to attend many other teaching courses and major
conferences held during their training year. All fellows are given
formal training in laboratory microsurgery at the beginning of the
fellowship.
