Financial Considerations
The accompanying table shows an estimate of student costs for the academic year 2008-2009. The Room and Board charge is based on average room rates for Rubin and Greenberg Hall along with estimates for food and utilities. If you reside off-campus, your expenses will be higher. Summer expenses will not be included in your financial aid award. You may be able to finance the additional expenses through the unsubsidized portion of the Federal Stafford Loan or the Federal Graduate PLUS Loan.
While these figures are estimates of your educational expenses for the academic year, your actual budget may vary due to your choices in living arrangements and lifestyle. Aid may be adjusted to reflect actual costs on a case-by-case basis.
Loans, Scholarships, and Outside Work
The School of Medicine has low-cost educational loans available to students in need. Repayment is deferred while you are a student and interest charges do not exceed six percent in repayment.
Scholarship funds are distributed primarily based on financial need in order to attract the most competitive and diverse class. Stafford Student Loans are available to most students, providing up to $8,500 a year at interest rates subsidized by the federal government. An additional $32,000 in Stafford Loan funds is available with unsubsidized interest. These loans are the primary source of aid to students. Those students in need of additional aid are assisted through the school’s program.
Federal funds through the College Work Study Program are available for medicine-related summer jobs for students who qualify for financial aid.
