To ensure that its facilities keep pace with medical advances, NYU
Medical Center is undergoing extensive construction and renovation
process.
The Joan and Joel Smilow Research Center
Building on its reputation as one of the nation’s premier teaching and
biomedical research institutions, NYU Medical Center has nearly completed a new research
building, the Joan and Joel Smilow Research Center. The 13-story building, which
will overlook the East River, is scheduled to open in 2005. The state-of-the-art
facility will provide some 100,000 square feet of lab space to accommodate research
projects in 10 major programs: cancer, cardiovascular biology, cardiology, nephrology,
infectious diseases, neuroscience systems, molecular neuroscience, microbial
pathogenesis, epithelial cell biology, and genetics/ genomics/ proteomics. While
each program will have its own director, all programs are considered interdisciplinary,
so related programs will be located in close proximity to one another.

and patient care programs, the Medical Center established the NYU Cancer

opened in 2004. Since more than 85 percent of cancer care is delivered on
an outpatient basis,
the new facility provides state of the art patient care. Novel cancer

The Jean and David Blechman Cardiac and Vascular Center
Patients with cardiac and vascular diseases—the leading causes of death in the United States—often
require a vast array of clinical services and testing from various disciplines.
To meet these challenges, NYU School of Medicine opened the Jean and David
Blechman Cardiac & Vascular Center for the research, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cardiac and vascular diseases. The 13,000-square-foot facility, located on the 13th floor of the Arnold and Marie Schwartz Health Care Center, consolidates many of the services offered throughout the Medical Center and delivers them to patients more quickly and conveniently.
