January 2, 2007

Dear Colleagues,
I am saddened to inform you that our colleague, Abraham Sunshine, M.D. died this morning. Al came to NYU as an intern in 1953. He joined our faculty when he became Chief Medical Resident in 1956. Rising through the academic ranks, he was promoted to Professor of Clinical Medicine in 1975, and served in that capacity for more than 30 years. Among his many professional accomplishments, he was proud to have served as the Chair of the Medical Board of NYU (Tisch) Hospital.
Al was a devoted teacher, an outstanding clinician, and a warm friend and colleague to many. Al and his family endowed the Abraham Sunshine Associate Professorship in Clinical Medicine. It was conceived as a way to bring academic recognition to an outstanding clinician; Mitchell Charap holds the Professorship.
Funeral arrangements are currently planned for Thursday morning (January 4) at the Riverside (Amsterdam Avenue between 75th and 76th Street) at 10 a.m.
Al will be missed. Please join me in extending our sympathies to his family.
Sincerely,
Martin J. Blaser, M.D.
