History of the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology

The Division of Cardiology within NYU School of Medicine's Department of Medicine dates back to the establishment in 1911 of the John Wyckoff Adult Cardiology Clinic at Bellevue Hospital-the first cardiology clinic in the United States.

Under the long-term leadership of Dr. Arthur Fox, the division was recognized throughout the country for producing a truly outstanding cadre of clinical cardiologists and investigators.

Since assuming the position of Director of the division in 2001, Dr. Glenn I. Fishman has launched several new research, educational, and clinical programs, with the goal of establishing the NYU School of Medicine's Division of Cardiology as the premier cardiology program in the region.

In 2002 the division was renamed the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology, reflecting a most generous gift from a longtime friend of NYU Medical Center. This gift will enable the division to achieve many of the objectives that Dr. Fishman has set for the future.
