Doug Bails, MD has been selected as the 2008 Clinical Faculty Inductee of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society Delta Chapter of New York. This honor is in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the teaching of medical students and residents at the NYU School of Medicine.
His induction took place at the Annual Installation Reception and Dinner to be held on March 25, 2008 at 6:00 pm at the W New York, Union Square in New York City.
“I first stepped through the doors of Bellevue Hospital Center,” says Doug Bails, “on July 1990 as an intern of the NYU/ Bellevue program.”
“Having gone to medical school at Downstate in Brooklyn, I had worked at Kings County Hospital and I still have vivid memories of the experience there. Amidst the fast paced and often crazed environment, there was a true bond that existed among the residents there; I remember being impressed at the commitment of the entire team working together on the behalf of their patients.
"My initial experiences at Bellevue only served to intensify these memories. Despite all the sleepless nights, sacrifices, and challenging patients, I look back at my three years as a resident as one of the best times of my life because I was part of a team working with other residents and faculty with common values and commitments.
“Over the past two decades, I have continued to work very closely with our students and residents as a teacher, a leader, and a mentor. Currently, as Associate Chief of the Medicine Service and Director of our Hospitalist Program at Bellevue, I enjoy my front-line role partnering with the residency program.
“I believe I have gained some perspective about why I have never seriously considered leaving: I like to believe that our students and residents at NYU and Bellevue represent the future of medicine. Their commitment to all patients and their true quest for knowledge create an idealistic environment that I am proud to be a part of.
“I am extremely proud to hold the honor of being selected 2008 Clinical Faculty Inductee of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. My admiration for the residents and students at NYU and Bellevue have kept me very involved in their educational and clinical experiences, and this recognition further serves to remind me that my decision to stay at NYU and Bellevue was the perfect career choice for me.”
