The NYU Cancer Institute has announced that Dr. Francesca Gany will direct its new CORE (Cancer Outreach, Outcomes and Research for Equity) initiative, aimed at addressing disparities in access to cancer care and designing effective intervention strategies to reduce this burden across various populations, specifically Hispanic, African American, Chinese and Arab.
The mission of CORE is to eliminate the unequal cancer burden experienced by minority populations by ensuring proportional representation in clinical care and research activities. The Center will reach its goals with a combination of research, clinical care, community outreach, communications, advocacy, and education strategies designed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and community involvement. The program is a joint undertaking with the Bellevue Cancer Center and Woodhull Hospital. Working with Dr. Gany on this undertaking will be Claudia Ayash, MPH, Administrative Director of the CORE initiative.
As the founder and Director of the Center for Immigrant Health, and Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Dr. Gany has extensive background in immigrant health research, curriculum development, education, and program and policy development. She teaches primary care, immigrant health, health policy and medical economics at the School of Medicine, has published and lectured widely on immigrant health issues, and has facilitated the dissemination of model projects nationally. We wish Dr. Gany every success in this exciting endeavor.
The Cancer Institute is positioned to address a critical problem in cancer care with the extraordinary opportunity to translate breakthroughs to other pressing medical conditions. The CORE Program will develop new pathways to level the delivery of care in urban environments, and reduce the personal and societal burden of cancer in our community, the nation and the world.
