Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Training Program

Co-Directors of Primary Care Internal Residency Training Program: Mack Lipkin, MD, and Sondra Zabar, MD

As the longest-running Primary Care residency in the United States, the NYU Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Training Program has been training leaders in general medicine for two decades. Its Primary Care faculty were also among the earliest adopters of validated measures of resident performance and skills. This focus on process and outcomes in residency education has fostered:

  • critical review of the medical literature in journal clubs
  • the development of educational blocks, including communications modules with video review
  • systematic teaching of clinical epidemiology and health policy

Of the Primary Care residents trained to date:

  • 92% remain in primary care
  • 80% have major teaching roles
  • 65% work in federally qualified underserved areas
  • 35% are conducting funded research
  • 25% have completed fellowship training in General Internal Medicine

With one exception, all graduated fellows of the NYU program currently hold academic research and education positions.
