The division's highly regarded Fellowship Training Program is designed to provide trainees with experience in all aspects of the subspecialty and to prepare them to successfully assume roles as clinicians, clinician-educators, or clinical and/or basic investigators.

The two-year Endocrinology Fellowship Training Program accepts four applicants per year. Trainees are exposed to a wide range of endocrine and metabolic problems in ambulatory and inpatient settings. This clinical experience is complemented by highly interactive didactic education in both basic and clinical arenas under the supervision of expert physicians and scientists.

The program is conducted at all three major teaching hospitals, with first-year fellows rotating between Bellevue, the VA Medical Center New York, and Tisch on a monthly basis.

The educational activities of the Division of Endocrinology also include the training of medical students and house staff. The division offers an Endocrine and Reproductive Systems Course for second-year medical students, as well as the opportunity to participate in a popular elective rotation.

Fellows participate in all levels of the division's educational activities, teaching both medical students and house officers rotating on the Endocrine elective. Endocrine fellows are also given research opportunities and responsibilities.

Each trainee meets with the Program Director during his or her first year to discuss research opportunities and an appropriate mentor. Active participation in research studies occupies about 60 percent of a trainee's second year. For some trainees, research forms the basis of a third year under the sponsorship of the faculty member with whom they are working.
