Program Overview

The New York University School of Medicine Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine fellowship program includes four major urban hospitals:

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine provides an outstanding training program for pulmonary and critical care physicians, physician-scientists, andpre- and postdoctoral basic scientists in the physiology, cell, and molecular biology of the respiratory system.The Division is internationally acclaimed for its clinical pulmonary training on the Chest Service, BellevueHospital Center. Two Bellevue Chest Service faculty were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology for their pioneering efforts inaugurating the era of respiratory physiology in 1956.

When William N. Rom, M.D., M.P.H., professor of medicine, was appointed director in 1989, the training program expanded to include environmental and occupational medicine, and molecular and cell biology. New York University has a Department and Institute of Environmental Medicine, with main laboratories in Sterling Forest, Tuxedo, New York. The Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine is the focal point for molecular and cell biology research at New York University. Research stipends are provided by an institutional training grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
