MRI before removal of a metastatic tumor in the brain
Tumors that spread to the brain from cancer at distant sites in the body are called brain metastases or metastatic brain tumors. These can come from a wide variety of cancers types including breast, lung, melanoma, renal (kidney), and tumors of gastrointestinal origin. Treatment of metastatic tumors focuses on reduction or elimination of neurological symptoms as well as prevention of new symptoms, and control of disease within the central nervous system. Such treatment is coordinated with oncologists and radiation oncologists who may treat the patient for disease outside the central nervous system as well.
