The philosophy of the Mother-Baby Unit is based on respect for the individual needs of the family and recognition that the mother and newborn are interdependent. The health and the well-being of the family is promoted through patient care, education and support to ensure that the patient and family return home with confidence, knowledge and skill to care for themselves and their newborn.
- The Mother-Baby Unit includes a 36-bed Level 1 Newborn Nursery consisting of a transitional nursery for infants newly admitted to the Mother-Baby Unit from Labor and Delivery and a Respite Nursery.
- Patient population consists of post-partum vaginal delivery and post-operative Cesarean delivery mothers and healthy newborns who have demonstrated successful adaptation to extra-uterine life.
- Our family-centered philosophy encourages keeping mothers and babies together. Services provided in addition to nursing and medical care include breastfeeding assistance and support, patient and family education and psychosocial support for the transition to parenthood.
- Our Mother-baby nurse provides and coordinates care for both the mother and baby in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team that includes:
- Nursing Management
- Nurse Practitioners
- Pediatricians
- Obstetricians
- Senior Nursing Staff
- Nursing Attendants
- Lactation Consultants
- Parent Educators
- Social Workers
- No prior mother-baby nursing experience required. We offer an extensive 8 weeks of orientation which includes clinical and classroom training taught by our nursing education department and a unit preceptor. Orientation includes intensive training in breastfeeding support, patient family education and the psycho-social needs of the childbearing family.
