Introduction to the Residency Training Program
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Program at the New York University Hospitals Center is a four year training program consisting of twenty-nine residents. Appointments for the seven first year positions are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). An additional preliminary first year position is filled outside and after the match.
Residents who join the program receive a broad education covering obstetrics, gynecology, the subspecialties and primary women's health care. The housestaff is under the supervision of faculty renowned for their clinical care and basic scientific research. The component hospitals of Bellevue and Tisch each have distinct characteristics. Bellevue is a large of a large municipal hospital with a diverse patient population; Tisch is a large private university referral center drawing patients from a wide geographic area for all of the divisions in our department and the medical center. The combination provides an enviable mix of medical, surgical, sociological, obstetrical, and gynecological problems that cannot be found under the roof of any single institution.
Education of the house staff is accomplished via a combination of didactic lectures, conferences, journal clubs and direct hands-on experience, always under the direction of an attending physician. The unique patient population, derived from the Bellevue Hospital Center and Tisch University Hospital, provides for a broad spectrum of experiences that enable these educational goals to be met.
