Third-Year Clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Third-year medical students participate in a six-week clerkship in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at one of two sites:

  • North Shore University Hospital
  • Bellevue and Tisch Hospital (combined)

At each site students will be expected to participate in a program designed to give a broad exposure to women's health and to focus on details essential to the practice of our specialty. The program includes direct patient care in inpatient and outpatient settings, lectures specifically designed to provide a solid background in obstetric and gynecologic science, and teaching sessions with faculty and residents in our department.

Students assigned to North Shore University Hospital spend one week each on obstetrics, oncology, gynecology, outpatient clinics, and urogynecology. The sixth week repeats one of the five rotations. Dr. Gerald Scholl is the site director, and meets with the students regularly for case presentations.

Students assigned to Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals spend:

  • Two weeks in obstetrics, which includes night float
  • One week in each of the following: general gynecology, gynecologic oncology, and clinic
  • One week of a chosen elective: maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive choice, midwifery, REI, or clinic

Site directors meet with the students in small group sessions for case conferences and studies.

There will be weekend and overnight call at both sites.

At the end of the clerkship, written and oral examinations are given to assess the fund of knowledge gained throughout the clerkship. The final grade is a composite of the clinical performance, tutorial and classroom performance, and the final written and oral examinations.
