Psychodynamic
Psychotherapy
of Adults, Children & Adolescents
NYU Psychoanalytic Institute is pleased to offer two post-graduate
educational programs, the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy of Adults
and the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy of Children & Adolescents.
These two-year courses of study are designed for psychiatrists,
psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, and other qualified
professionals interested in enhancing their skills in psychoanalytic
psychotherapy. Our aim is to deepen the clinician's understanding
of the patient's emotional life, particularly as it is experienced
in the therapeutic relationship.
For most mental health professions, graduate training experience
does not fully prepare one to be a skilled, knowledgeable and confident
therapist. While we continue to learn from our patients throughout
our professional lives, we believe that advanced formal training
is crucial to our efforts to provide the highest level of clinical
competence.
The core of these programs is a series of seminars, taught by faculty
members of the Adult and the Child & Adolescent Analysis
Sections of NYU Psychoanalytic Institute. The instructors are
highly trained analysts with extensive clinical and professional
experience, members of the faculty of NYU School of Medicine. The courses
examine the conceptual underpinnings of psychoanalytic theory and
technique as applied to the psychodynamic psychotherapy of adults,
children and adolescents.
In addition to academic study, training is enriched by ongoing
case conferences and clinical psychotherapy supervision provided
by Institute faculty. The patients are drawn from the clinical practices
of the students. Candidates also need to be currently undergoing
(or have already undergone) their own personal psychodynamic psychotherapy
or psychoanalysis.
Successful completion of the program leads to a certificate from
the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Program of NYU Psychoanalytic
Institute.
Why Study Psychotherapy at NYU Psychoanalytic
Institute?
The psychotherapy training program at the NYU Psychoanalytic Institute
is enriched by teachers and supervisors from the Institute who have
undergone rigorous training in psychoanalytic theory, principles
and practice. Candidates benefit not only from their teachers'
and supervisors' extensive backgrounds in psychoanalysis, but also
from a program which is patterned after the Institute's highly effective
psychoanalytic training program.
NYU Psychoanalytic Institute offers the special advantage of being
affiliated with one of the country's foremost medical schools, NYU
School of Medicine. Candidates in the Psychotherapy Program benefit from access
to the Medical Center Library and free subscriptions to the Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing database (P-E-P), the Institute's psychoanalytic library,
and other resources of the Medical Center.

The psychodynamic psychotherapy training programs are post-graduate
programs for individuals who have earned their graduate degrees
in psychiatry, psychology, social work, or psychiatric nursing;
who are licensed and professionally insured; and who are practicing
psychotherapy with adults or children. If you are currently in psychiatric
residency or in a child psychiatry fellowship, you may be eligible
to begin training.

Course work
The program consists of two years of classes, which are offered
on Tuesday evenings, 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., from mid-September
to early June. Classes are grouped in trimesters, each 10 weeks
long. Class evenings are divided into two 70-minute seminars. Most
courses involve assigned reading.
Supervision
Each candidate schedules one hour per week of supervision with an
Institute faculty member in the first year, and two per week in
the second, at a cost of $50 per session, payable to the supervisor.
The supervisory process is intended to focus intensively on the
ongoing treatment of suitable cases. Candidates write brief annual
case reports, which are discussed with their supervisor.
Personal Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Personal experience in therapy enhances the educational process
and clinical work. Your own personal psychodynamic psychotherapy
or psychoanalysis is required, although it may have been completed
prior to training. If desired, a list of available NYUPIr
faculty can be obtained from the Institute.
Tuition & Fees
Annual tuition is $2,250, payable in installments.Fees for supervision, $50 per session, are paid directly to the
supervisor. Reduction of fees for both psychotherapy and psychoanalysis,
and for additional supervision, may be requested.

The course of post-graduate study in the psychodynamic psychotherapy
of adults, children and adolescents explores a wide variety of psychopathologic
syndromes. Issues of conflict and deficits in mental function which
are a consequence of biological and developmental determinants are
also explored. The technique courses in particular address the ways
in which psychodynamic psychotherapy can affect and modify pathologic
outcomes of development. Group discussion of individual case material
presented by seminar participants and instructors makes up a significant
component of the learning. The clinical seminars approach the various
phases of treatment - opening, working through and termination -
as case material becomes available.
