Buspirone Clinical
Characteristics
- The efficacy of
buspirone treatment of generalized anxiety is comparable with that of
benzodiazepines, but buspirone has a superior safety profile. It is
the first effective alternative to benzodiazepines to have been introduced
in 3 decades.
- Buspirone has
a progressive onset of action, requiring 2 weeks or more to reach full
therapeutic effect.
- Buspirone is not
associated with sedation, impaired psychomotor activity, cognitive impairment,
withdrawal symptoms, or sexual dysfunction.
- It does not interact
with alcohol or other CNS depressants.
- Buspirone also
has antidepressant properties.
