Notes:
- The second open
trial evaluated buspirone in affective disorder patients who were refractory
to non-MAOI antidepressants for at least 4 months before relapsing during
the fall/winter months.
- The nine patients
fulfilled DSM-IIIR criteria for major depression.
- After the addition
of buspirone, six patients (67%) achieved complete resolution of symptoms
(CGI=1). These patients were taking the SSRI fluoxetine as their primary
antidepressant.
- Two patients
(22%) experienced partial response and one patient (11%) demonstrated
no response.
- The mean posttrial
CGI score was 1.6±1.0, P 0.001.
- Side effectsódrowsiness,
nervousness/irritability, spacinessówere reported in three patients.
- These two studies
indicate that moderate doses of buspirone can boost antidepressant response
both in nonresponders and in patients suffering from winter relapse
of depressive symptoms.
