Teaching Hospitals

Residents receive their training at Bellevue Hospital Center, Tisch Hospital, Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopedic Institute (HJD) and the New York Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). The integrated training program includes diverse patient populations. This combination provides house staff with a truly comprehensive educational experience. Bellevue, Tisch and the VAMC are contiguously located along First Avenue from 23 Street to 34th Street; HJD is a 10 minute walk from the main campus.

Bellevue Hospital Center is adjacent to NYU Medical Center on First Avenue. It is a 21-story 842-bed facility, one of the largest single municipal hospital buildings in North America. It is the flagship hospital of New York City's Health and Hospitals Corporation, the nation's largest municipal health-care system.

The origin of Bellevue Hospital can be traced to the colonial era and has a rich history of service to the community. Its association with NYU dates back over 100 years. Its medical staff consists largely of NYU faculty and residents. While Bellevue has a long history, its facilities are thoroughly modern.

Tisch Hospital is the 726-bed University Hospital of NYU Medical Center, opened at its present site in 1963. It serves as focus for a broad spectrum of highly regarded tertiary care programs, including comprehensive cancer care, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, and organ transplantation.

Residents rotate through the Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopedic Institute as part of their training in musculoskeletal imagining. It is one of the primary component hospitals of the NYU Hospitals Center and specializes in the treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. The musculoskeletal radiologists cover HJD, Tisch and Bellevue.

The Department of Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System is a consolidated facility comprised of two main campuses, one in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan; our house staff rotate only through the Manhattan facility. Located in mid-Manhattan, the New York VAMC is a tertiary care facility and a VA referral center in several specialized areas including neurosurgery and cardiac surgery. A new building provides expanded space for radiology and nuclear medicine, making it one of the most advanced imaging centers in the country.
