Call Responsibilities
After completing their initial rotations through the general radiology specialty areas, our first-year residents begin their supervised call learning experience in February, on the evening and weekend day shifts at Tisch Hospital. During this experience, the first-year resident performs the initial interpretations on the ER cases, which are then immediately reviewed by the on-site Emergency Radiology attending, prior to the reports being made available to the requesting clinician. During this time, the Tisch overnight shift is covered by a night float pool (composed of second and third-year residents, each of whom has one week of night float responsibility).
Our second-year residents take call at Bellevue Hospital. The third-year residents take call at Tisch Hospital until February, at which time they graduate to "Body Call" (which involves the interpretation of chest and abdomen/pelvis CT’s at Bellevue plus emergency ultrasounds at Bellevue and Tisch).
Senior residents are always available to provide backup consultation for junior residents. Emergency Radiology and subspecialty attendings are also available for backup as needed. Feedback is provided to residents for all on-call cases.
Residents are on call no more frequently than an average of once per week, and are free of all clinical responsibilities on post-call days. The department is in full compliance with all New York State and ACGME regulations covering housestaff work hours.
