Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Programs

The Department provides diagnostic and treatment services to both in- and outpatients of all ages at Tisch Hospital and the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. Individual treatment, group therapy, computer assisted treatment, and counseling are provided as indicated.

Patients referred for speech-language pathology services are required to undergo an evaluation, which may include examinations of:

  • Language abilities: comprehensive examination of naming, speech fluency, speech repetition, comprehension of spoken and written language (i.e., reading function), and writing.

  • Speech production: articulation (i.e., pronunciation), voicing, rate, and rhythm of speech; strength, and coordination and agility of jaw, lip and tongue movement.

  • Communication function: ability to accomplish communication tasks, e.g., use the telephone, converse in 1:1 or group settings, understand and follow directions, read instructions, manage personal business, write letters, and use a computer.
