Laboratory Facilities
The
Basic Science Departments occupy 120,000 square
feet of space in the Medical Science Building
of the NYU Medical Center, located on First
Avenue and 32nd Street. This building has undergone
major renovations during the last decade and
is a modern facility which includes biological
containment laboratories, protein chemistry,
and nucleic acid synthesis facilities, a fluorescent
activated cell sorting core service, electron
and light microscopes, image processing equipment,
and microinjection instrumentation for the production
of transgenic mice. All the departments are
equipped for state of the art chemical and biochemical
work and have independent conference rooms,
specialized libraries, photography services,
and central offices.

Center
for AIDS Research
The National Institutes of Health-designated Center for AIDS Research
(CFAR) is a consortium of the NYU Medical Center and the New York Department
of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Through its programs and shared services,
CFAR seeks to enhance and strengthen ongoing AIDS-related basic and clinical
research, provide the means for the development and stimulus of additional
meritorious research and further collaborate and interact between participating
investigators with the overall goal of expanding the knowledge and understanding
of AIDS. CFAR attempts to accomplish its goals through: 1) six interdisciplinary
research programs and nine shared resource facilities or cores; 2) expanding
the research base by recruiting and developing promising AIDS investigators;
and 3) fostering communication and collaboration among investigators involved
in AIDS research by providing opportunities both to the basic scientist
for the clinical application of newresearch findings and to the clinical
scientist for the basic research backup afforded by the cores to enhance
the goals of their clinical studies.
