Stipend
The annual stipend for all graduate students and M.D./Ph.D. students
is $27,000 (as of Fall 2007). Employee Requisition forms submitted
by the Sackler Office for all incoming students are processed
through Human Resources. As a result the Confidential Personnel
Profile (CPP) is created and processed through the Payroll Department
in order to generate paychecks. Students are paid on the 1st day
of each month (beginning October 1st for first year students).
All graduate students are considered monthly employees and can
pick-up their paychecks in the Treasury Department. Students have
the option of enrolling in a Direct Deposit program at their bank
and should contact Human Resources at 212-404-3777 for further
details.

Tuition and Fees
The tuition costs for all courses are paid by the School of Medicine.
All students must complete Tuition Remission forms supplied by their
training program office during registration. Only those students
who are on training grants do not have to complete these forms.
Each training program should supply a letter that indicates which
account should be charged for the student’s registration fees.
Students should submit these documents to the Sackler Office for
processing at GSAS.
Any invoices or statements received for tuition and/or fee expenses
should be forwarded to the Sackler Office. The Administrative Assistant
will be responsible for resolving all tuition and/or fee problems.

New Information (pdf)
In rare instances, if a student exhibits irrational behavior, noted
by faculty or staff, the Associate Dean may make a recommendation
that the student receive professional evaluation and treatment.
If a student chooses not to comply with this recommendation, he
or she will be asked to leave the graduate program. This ruling
will be invoked if the student’s actions could potentially
lead to personal harm to him/herself or others. This decision is
at the discretion of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and
the Dean of the Medical School.

Financial Aid
Sackler students, while eligible to apply for federal financial
aid, should consider that their stipend income as a Sackler graduate
student and their tuition costs covered by tuition remission or
grants are factored into their overall financial need.
FAFSA
The Graduate School of Arts and Science encourages all U.S.
citizens and permanent residents to complete the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for all
forms of federal and state aid, including the Federal Work-Study
Program and private loan programs. Forms are available in January
from the University Office of Financial Aid at 25 West 4th Street
or Graduate Enrollment Services at One-Half Fifth Avenue. The FAFSA
and the required loan applications should be filed after January
1, but preferably, before March 1 for fall enrollment in the following
September. Students should give permission for application data
to be sent to New York University (write institution code 002785
in the "Title IV Code" space). The telephone number for
Graduate Financial Aid is 212-998-4444.

Housing Loans
Low interest loans (4%) for the express purpose of financing
housing costs of Ph.D. candidates at the Sackler Institute will
be available on the basis of student need and the availability of
funds. These loans are available to U.S. citizens and permanent
residents only. (M.D./Ph.D. students do not qualify for these loans.)
Students must apply for the loan by September 30th of each year
by completing an application available in the Sackler Office. While
these loans are independent of student Financial Aid packages, they
are administered together with the Graduate Financial Aid Office
and the Sackler Institute.
Computer Loans
The Sackler Institute offers no-interest, tax-free computer loans
to incoming students up to $2,500. Each year during orientation
a computer fair is scheduled in the School of Medicine. Students
may attend the fair and review the computer packages that are presented
(often at greater discounted prices than retail). Other options
include designing your own computer package from information available
on the internet or speaking with a representative from the NYU Computer
Store. After the student chooses a computer package, the order is
handled through the Sackler Office. Once the computer hardware arrives,
the student signs a payroll deduction agreement (approximately $100
per month) until the entire purchase balance is paid in full.

Travel Awards
Graduate School of Arts
and Science,
Student Travel Grant Application 2004-2005
Sackler Travel Grant
Application
The Sackler Institute offers one type of travel grant (for presenting
or non-presenting students) that wish to attend scientific conferences.
The grant may be used for registration, travel, housing, and other
reasonable expenses. Stop by the Sackler office to obtain travel
award applications.
Eligability
All second year and above Sackler Institute Ph.D. students except
those presently on NIH departmental training grants are eligible
for the Sackler Institute Travel Grant. (Students on training grants
should request program travel funds.) Presentation is not required.
The NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science Student Conference Awards
are available for Sackler students who are presenting at a meeting.
These candidates must apply for the GSAS award prior to applying
for a Sackler Travel Grant. All students must complete this application
to be eligible for the award.
The student should indicate whether or not they would be presenting
at the meeting. Students are eligible for up to $300 in travel grant
monies. Students may also apply for the GSAS award, and if awarded,
keep these monies in addition to the $300 from Sackler.
Students may be awarded only one (1) travel grant per year. We will
not 'bank' any unused monies from an award. MD/PhD students are
eligible for awards up to $300 from the MD/PhD program and are also
eligible to apply for the GSAS award.
Application Deadlines:
Sackler Travel Grant
Applications should be submitted at least one month prior to the
conference for which the funding is being requested. It is suggested
that applicants keep a copy of the application for their records.
GSAS travel grant
There are three application periods during the academic year. Stop
by the Sackler Office to obtain an application and to inquire about
appropriate deadlines.
Selection Process
Sackler Travel Grant
Because of the limited number of awards available, all applications
will be reviewed by the Director of the Sackler Institute upon receipt
of the application. Applicants will be notified of the decision
within 30 days of application submission. Students should not attend
conferences expecting to be reimbursed - applicants should be prepared
to pay all costs necessary, as funding is not guaranteed.
GSAS Travel Grant
Sackler students compete with other GSAS students for monies, thus
approval is not guaranteed. Students are notified by e-mail of their
award.
Additional Conditions:
Students may be awarded no more than one travel award per academic
year. We will not bank any unused monies from an award.
Students cannot receive travel monies of more than $600. Grant recipients
are expected to make all travel arrangements themselves. Within
10 days upon return from the conferences, recipients must submit
original receipts to the Sackler Institute Office on a NYU Travel
Expense Report.
Applicants should make an effort to avoid incurring unnecessary
expenses (such as unreasonably expensive hotel rooms, transportation
tickets, etc.) as such expenses will not be funded. Per university
policy, telephone calls will not be reimbursed.
