Deadline: AUGUST
15, 2008
PURPOSE
This funding program considers unsuccessful
NEW R01 and R21 applications (first submission or revised submission
of an application that received a favorable critique but has never
been funded). Similar to the Bridging Program, the purpose of this
Incentive Program is to provide funds for the completion of necessary
experiments, the collection of essential data, or the maintenance
of essential laboratory infrastructure that are deemed necessary
to address the critiques of the unsuccessful application and are
likely to propel an unfunded grant application into the fundable
range on its subsequent submittal. This program is open to all faculty.
Unsuccessful grants at the 25th percentile or better will be given
priority, but those with less favorable scores whose critiques present
an opportunity for an appropriate and compelling response will not
be excluded from consideration.
The Bridging Fund supports research activities
that will directly contribute to a more competitive grant submission,
such as:
- acquire data to meet recommendations of
extramural reviewers;
- complete work needed for the "preliminary
results" section;
- demonstrate successful use of methods,
technology, or instrumentation.
ELIGIBILITY
Full time faculty who have submitted an extramural,
peer-reviewed, individual research new or revised R01 or R21 grant
to NIH that was not funded.
SUPPORT
Funds may be used for supplies, support of
technical personnel, graduate students and other research related
expenses. Funds may not be used for faculty salaries, equipment,
or travel. Funds may be requested for faculty (research) who are
not PIs on a grant but who are funded by a grant and are integral
to its success.
A maximum budget of $75,000 in direct costs
may be requested for the R01 applications and $50,000 for the R21
applications. There will be no indirect costs on these awards.
Funding is for one year and may not be renewed.
If an extramural award is received during the
bridging project period, the unobligated balance of the bridge award
will be returned to the Bridging Fund.
ADMINISTRATION OF THE PROGRAM
The Bridging and Incentive Program Fund is
administered by the Dean's Office through the Office of Sponsored
Programs Administration. The program is directed by a Research Bridging
Support Committee composed of prominent scientists of the faculty
appointed by the Dean. The Committee is responsible for the review
and approval of bridging applications and policies and guidelines.
REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS
The Research Bridging Support Committee will
review all applications. Awards will be based primarily on the likelihood
of future extramural funding, as well as on scientific merit, productivity
of the principal investigator, and availability of other funds.
It is expected that applicants will submit
an extramural application during the bridging award period. The
applicant's stated plan for this submission will be considered in
the review of applications and recommendation of awards.
REQUIREMENTS OF INVESTIGATORS RECEIVING
BRIDGING AWARDS
Successful applicants will be expected to submit
a final progress report within one month of the end of the funding
period. Funds should be used within one year of receiving the award.
