The parathyroid glands are four small glands in the neck that are near the thyroid gland. Generally two glands sit behind each lobe of the thyroid gland. They produce parathyroid hormone, which controls calcium levels. Most people have four parathyroid glands, with a small percentage of people having either three or five.
