Thyroid Disease

The thyroid gland is a shield- or butterfly-shaped gland that sits in front of the trachea (windpipe). The thyroid produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism. These hormones affect most tissues in the body.

A number of conditions can affect the thyroid, including:

Hyperthyroidism
This condition makes the thyroid function excessively and is commonly caused by Graves Disease.

Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is the under-functioning of the thyroid gland and can be caused by Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis or Goiter.

Thyroiditis
Each form of thyroiditis - Subacute, Reidel’s, and Acute Suppurative - has its own course of treatment.

Thyroid Nodules
Complete evaluation and testing should be done to rule out cancer in patients with thyroid nodules.

Thyroid Cancer
Types include Differentiated, Medullary, Anaplastic, and Lymphoma.

Complications of Thyroid Surgery
Complications can involve the laryngeal nerve, hypoparathyroidism, or hematoma.
