The Mission of the Institute of Reconstructive Surgery (IRPS)
of the NYU Medical Center is to maintain a leadership role in
local, national and international plastic surgery by providing
the highest standards of patient care, by offering optimal educational
programs and by organizing clinical and basic science research
programs. To attain the above goals, the Institute must:
- Provide state-of-the-art clinical services to all patients
with plastic surgery problems in an effective, unbiased and
sympathetic manner. Multidisciplinary conferences are offered
for the evaluation and treatment of complex clinical problems.
- Offer professional training programs for plastic surgery residents,
fellows and others, including medical students, rotating
residents, practicing plastic surgeons and other professionals.
- Organize educational and self-help programs for the benefit
of patients, their families and the general public.
- Develop symposia on a variety of plastic surgery subjects
which would be available to all of the above.
- Conduct research programs at both the basic science and clinical
levels on a variety of plastic surgery-related subjects which
will lead to enhanced patient care.
- Recruit and develop a professional staff of the highest quality
with subspecialty expertise and a commitment to leadership
and excellence in patient care, education and research.
- Maintain affiliations with the participating hospitals (Tisch
Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital,
Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and North Shore University
Hospital) which are mutually beneficial and conducive to
enhanced patient care, education and research.
- Promote avenues of communication with other health care providers,
as well as private and government regulatory agencies, in
order to be current with societal needs and viewpoints.
- Operate a fiscally independent facility to achieve the above
goals in patient care, education and research. The Institute
should operate without a deficit to ensure funding of these
programs.
