The Transplant Surgical Fellowship

The NYU Medical Center/SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Center is a two-year ASTS approved fellowship training program in liver and kidney transplantation. The fellowship is designed to:

  • expand on the surgical and research skills of the fellow

  • provide an in-depth surgical experience in liver and kidney transplant surgery, multiorgan organ procurement techniques, living donor liver transplantation, and laparoscopic living donor kidney procurement

  • teach the fellow how to care for the patients pre and post transplantation, including immunosuppressant therapy

The fellows rotate in three month intervals at each campus.

Why This Fellowship is Unique

The nature of our service is such that fellows have the opportunity to meet, evaluate, and treat potential recipients from the moment they first arrive at our center through post-transplant discharge and on into the outpatient phase of their management. The ability to interview a liver or kidney recipient six months after a successful transplant and ask them to reflect on their experiences and understand how your interventions made a difference is one of the most valuable experiences we can give to our fellows.

We believe this affords our fellows the unique opportunity to become better transplant physicians and surgeons and will instill in them the importance of continuity of care that is so critical for the transplant patient.
