Two major complications can occur after transplantation.
Organ RejectionRejection occurs when your body's immune cells (lymphocytes) attack the transplanted organ. Most transplanted organs experience some degree of rejection, but it can usually be reversed by increasing the dosage of your immunosuppression.
The first rejection episode usually occurs within the first two to three weeks of transplantation, and 80% occur within the first three months. You will be seen in the clinic frequently following your discharge from the hospital so that any signs of rejection are caught early on and treated immediately.
InfectionInfection may occur because your immune system is suppressed, making it difficult for you to fight off infection. It is important to monitor your temperature on a daily basis to see if you are running a fever. An infection is easily treated without any harmful long-term effects if detected early.
