Vascular Surgery at NYU

Expert Vein and Artery Surgeons in New York City

Why Choose Vascular Surgery at NYU?
Cardiovascular disease—disorders of the heart and blood vessels—is the leading cause of death in the United States, costing our society over 83 billion dollars each year in health services, medications, and lost work time due to disability. One American dies very 32 seconds of cardiovascular disease.

Today, NYU Medical Center’s Division of Vascular Surgery offers the largest team of top-level vascular specialists in New York City. Members of a leading academic medical center, NYU’s vascular surgeons are deeply committed to finding the most advanced, innovative, proven methods to treat diseases of the arteries and veins.

NYU’s expert vascular surgeons offer:

  • Decades of experience treating thousands of patients with conditions ranging from varicose veins to life-threatening issues of arterial aneurysms, carotid stenosis, deep vein thrombosis, and limb-threatening ischemia (poor circulation)
  • Some of the highest surgical success rates in the state, the nation, and the world
  • Authoritative insight into current research and clinical trials to further new, promising approaches to improving vascular health
  • Academic leadership: teaching current and future vascular specialists worldwide, advising manufacturers of emerging vein and artery treatment devices, and assisting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in approving new vascular treatment methods

Decades of Experience
Nine Vascular Experts for Every Patient
NYU’s team of 9 vascular surgeons, one of the largest in the United States, maximizes each specialist’s unique focus and expertise with a team approach to treating vein and artery diseases.

Each week, NYU’s surgeons, resident physicians, and vascular surgery fellows discuss and debate the best possible treatment path for each patient. These discussions, which often generate as many as 9 different opinions from 9 different experts, draw on the in-depth knowledge and experience that each surgeon contributes.

Our surgeons respect each patient’s needs and concerns and make judicious treatment decisions—conservative or aggressive—with the best interest of the patient in mind. Our surgeons work with each patient to create a long-term treatment strategy that optimizes recovery time, individual lifestyle, and extended vascular health.

High Surgical Success Rates
Our Proof is in Our Outcomes
Even before our surgeons begin treatment, each patient’s recovery is the number one goal. NYU’s vascular surgeons have achieved:

  • The lowest rate of complications resulting from aneurysm surgery in New York state
  • More endovascular reconstructions than any other hospital in the United States
  • A zero mortality rate for endovascular surgery
  • A 1–2% perioperative complication rate during carotid endarterectomy, one of the lowest complication rates worldwide
  • A 70–80% success rate of leg salvage in patients with lower extremity artery disease who were previously told that amputation was their only option
  • A 1.5% complication rate — the lowest in New York state—in preventing stroke by removing plaque from arteries

Authoritative Insight
Knowledge that Advances with Each New Vascular Discovery
Each of NYU’s vascular surgeons is a faculty member working to translate internationally prominent clinical and academic research into new, promising treatment methods and better medical care.

Currently, NYU’s investigators are actively evaluating the success of open- vs. closed-cell arterial stents, pursuing the best carotid artery stents and protection devices. In addition, we have helped industry determine the effectiveness of emerging varicose vein treatment methods including endovenous ablation.

Clinical trials at NYU evaluate promising vein and artery devices for treatment effectiveness and unknown side effects. Our surgeons lead the investigations at every stage of the trial.

  1. Before the trial begins, NYU’s advising vascular surgeons participate in a scientific review board alongside medical professionals, administrators, and individuals from the community to evaluate the proposed trial and ensure that it is scientifically sound and appropriately conducted.
  2. During the trial, NYU surgeons provide high-quality medical care for the participating patients and answer questions posed by the medical industry about the treatment method being studied.
  3. Following the trial, NYU surgeons assist the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in determining whether the device under investigation can be licensed and approved for use in treating patients.
