What happens during an endovascular procedure?
Endovascular surgery combines both surgery and radiology skills to enable physicians to relieve blocked arteries without the traditional large surgical incisions.
During the endovascular repair procedure:
- A local, epidural, or general anesthetic is administered and surgery begins.
- The surgeon makes an incision in the groin (femoral artery).
- The surgeon inserts a catheter (small thin tube) into the artery and navigates to the aneurysm site using a surgical wire and X-ray guidance.
- The surgeon places a stent-graft
into the artery. The stent-graft relines the blood vessel and relieves the pressure of the aneurysm. - The surgeon removes the catheter, and closes the incision.
Endovascular aneurysm repair has many benefits and few complications.
All patients who undergo endovascular surgery at NYU are enrolled in a computerized database. Surgeons record the follow-up details in this database (see below: "Aneurysm Surgery Research at NYU") and use the information to study the long-term results of these therapies.

Before 1994, patients with enlarged abdominal aortic aneurysms required extensive, invasive open surgery and prolonged convalescence. Today, these same patients—even those with the most life-threatening aneurysms—can expect to be treated with a minimally invasive procedure (approximately 1 hour of surgery) and to be discharged from NYU the following morning.
Working with interventional radiologists and biomedical engineers, NYU’s vascular surgeons pioneered the multidisciplinary approach that made this treatment possible.
