What happens during an endovascular procedure?
A 90-minute surgery procedure generally performed under local anesthesia.
Benefits and Complications of Endovascular Surgery
Easier recovery, no need for blood transfusion, local anesthesia, excellent short-term and long-term results at NYU.

What happens during an endovascular procedure?
Endovascular surgery combines both surgery and radiology skills to enable physicians to relieve blocked arteries without the traditional large surgical incisions.
During the endovascular repair procedure:
Endovascular aneurysm repair has many benefits and few complications.
All patients who undergo endovascular surgery at NYU are enrolled in a computerized database. Surgeons record the follow-up details in this database (see below: "Aneurysm Surgery Research at NYU") and use the information to study the long-term results of these therapies.
More information about aneurysm repair surgery is available on the Society for Vascular Surgery website.
Benefits and Complications of Endovascular Surgery
What are the risks of endovascular aneurysm surgery?
Vascular surgery places a patient at slight risk of bleeding and blood clots. The experience and expertise of NYU’s vascular surgeons render these complications rare.
Aneurysm Surgery Research at NYU
The convergence of advanced imaging and endovascular surgery has revolutionized care for patients with vascular disease.
Before 1994, patients with enlarged abdominal aortic aneurysms required extensive, invasive open surgery and prolonged convalescence. Today, these same patients—even those with the most life-threatening aneurysms—can expect to be treated with a minimally invasive procedure (approximately 1 hour of surgery) and to be discharged from NYU the following morning.
Working with interventional radiologists and biomedical engineers, NYU’s vascular surgeons pioneered the multidisciplinary approach that made this treatment possible. This cutting-edge, collaborative effort is one example of how our surgeons push the limits of medical innovation to create and advance the best possible treatment methods.
Vascular surgeons at NYU perform more endovascular reconstructions than any other hospital in the United States, with excellent surgery outcomes.
The sheer volume of procedures performed allow our surgeons to analyze the outcomes and create techniques to refine and improve this minimally invasive approach.
Clinical Trials for Arterial Aneurysms
Zenith ® TX2™ Thoracic TAA Endovascular Graft Clinical Study Continued Access
Collects data regarding the Zenith ® TX2™ TAA Endovascular Graft in elective treatment of patients with descending thoracic aortic aneurysms.
Positive Impact of Endovascular Options for Treating Aneurysms Early: The Pivotal Study
Seeks to determine whether repairing small aneurysms using the AneuRx AAA Stent Graft is superior to serial imaging surveillance with respect to the frequent rupture or aneurysm-related death over a 3-year follow-up period.
Evaluation of the Medtronic Vascular Talent Thoracic Stent Graft System for Treatment of Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms
5-year follow-up for patients who have had an endovascular repair of a descending thoracic aneurysm with the Talent Thoracic Stent Graft System.
Clinical Study Comparing Use of the Modified Bifurcated EXCLUDER Endoprosthesis to Open Surgical Repair in the Primary Treatment of Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms
5-year follow-up of patients who have received the Excluder Endograft for treatment of their infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Why Choose NYU for Aneurysm Surgery?
NYU’s vascular surgeons began performing endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms in 1994
NYU’s vascular surgeons are certified and trained to use all of the currently approved FDA devices, and experts in treating aneurysms in many parts of the body. Vascular surgeons at NYU currently perform more endovascular reconstructions than any other hospital in the United States.
